ASKERAN FORTRESS | MAYRABERD

Askeran fortress is located approximately 14 km from Stepanakert, which is surrounded on both sides by the Karkar river valley. It is also known as Mayraberd. The strong defensive structure of the fortress is especially remarkable. The fort is fortified with double walls and has high circular towers. Askeran fortress consists of two department-complexes: the left-hand side – north-west and the right-hand side – south-east. The walls of the castle are 2m thick and 9m high. The towers, which serve as observation points, are connected to each other by narrow corridors.

THE SHIELD OF SHUSHI

Askeran existed as a barracks since the middle of the 18th century. It played an important role in the defense of Shushi. The fortress was heavily damaged during the Artsakh war. In the upper part of one of the towers, there are still traces of debris from the 1990s war missile.
