HIKE TO DRAGON LAKE / VISHAPALICH
Geghama mountains hide one of Armenia’s beautiful lakes, Dragon Lake, Vishapalich or Vanki Lake, under their umbrella. It is located at an altitude of 2620 m above sea level, east of Geghard village.
The road to the lake is quite easy to pass. Visitors to Vishapalchi are greeted by beautiful fields and stunning mountain views. Azhdahak, the highest peak of the Geghama mountains, can be seen very beautifully from the lake. Near Vishapalchi you can see dragon stones with storks carved on them. These stones have a history of centuries. They reached us from 2-3 millennia BC.
The latter were considered a symbol of fertility and abundance and belonged to the cult of water. That is why they were found exclusively near rivers, lakes, springs and had the appearance of fish. Images of bulls, snakes, storks, rams and other animals and birds are mostly carved on them. In folk sayings, dragon stones embodied idols of water-worshiping deities that were able to transform into humans. For the first time, in 1909, dragon stones were discovered in the Gegham Mountains and in the mountain pastures not far from Lake Sevan. It is said that these places were endowed with a unique supernatural power.
