ABOUT THE POWERFUL TIGRANAKERT

The Tigranakert fortress, built in the 1st century BC, is located in the southeast of the Martakert region of the Republic of Artsakh. It was built by the Armenian king Tigran the Great. The worldly king built four cities named after him in his powerful empire. We learn about Tigranakert of Artsakh for the first time from the chronicles of historians Sebeos and Movses Kakhankatvetsi (7th century).

ARCHIOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS OF TIGRANAKERT

Excavations in Tigranakert region have been started since 2006. It is the only settlement bearing the name of King Tigran, the location of which has been precisely determined, and which is subject to archaeological research. As a result of the excavations, a part of the walls of the city citadel, the rock-hewn foundations of the walls, and a part of the basilica church in the central district were found. Excavations were also carried out in the early Christian cemetery. The religious complex near the city, the rock-hewn canal passing through its foot were also investigated. White limestone was mainly used in the construction of Tigranakert.

In 2010, the museum of the samples found as a result of these excavations was opened, where the valuable artifacts found during all these years are presented.
