Kilimanjaro Trekking 2024

Marangu Route

Climbing the highest mountain of the African continent – Kilimanjaro 5895m.

The Marangu or “Coca-Cola” route is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route with an overnight stay in huts, which makes Marangu a good option for trekking during the rainy season.

The route starts from the southeast of Mount Kilimanjaro. This route passes through all climatic zones, from tropical rainforests to permafrost, to beautiful African landscapes.

The tour package also includes a safari tour in Ngorongoro crater.

Marangu Route

Day 1. Arrival

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) from where you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 2. Hike from Marangu gate to Mandara Huts

After breakfast, you will head to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, to the Marangu gate (1860m). The road will pass through chagga villages, fields of sweet potatoes, manasawa, beans, corn, coffee and banana plantations.

Here the heavy bags will be handed over to the porters.

Attention: According to the rules of the park, each porter can carry not more than 20 kg of luggage.

After obtaining a climbing permit and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will start hiking to the Mandara camp (2700m).

The route includes a transition through the rainforest (where there is a high probability of tropical showers), so we recommend you to take not only spare clothes, but also a raincoat.

Throughout the Marangu route you will spend the night in special huts. They offer a great alternative for those who don’t want to sleep in tents.

Day 3. Hike from Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

Hiking duration: 5-6hrs

Distance: 15km

After an early breakfast, the group will go to the second high point – the Horombo camp. In good weather, Horombo camp offers a beautiful view of the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

Horombo huts can accommodate 120 people with beds. The camp is like a small village and the only huts on Kilimanjaro with beds. You will have one day here to rest and prepare.

Day 4. Horombo Hut - Zebra rocks ( Acclimatization)

Acclimatization climb to Zebra Rocks and higher up to 4200m.

Return to Horomobo.

Rest and overnight stay.

Zebra Rock, Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 5. Horombo Hut (3720m) - Kibo Hut (4700m)

Hiking duration: 5-6hrs

Distance: 15km

On this day, right after breakfast, the group will go to the Kibo camp (4700m). The route is not very difficult, keep a constant walking pace to save energy on the route to the top of Kilimanjaro, which is the most difficult part of the whole climb.

When you arrive at the camp, you will be offered lunch, after which we advise you to sleep as much as possible, avoid any physical activity and drink plenty of water.

Day 6. Hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro (Uhuru peak) 5895m

Hiking duration: 9-13hrs

Distance: 21km

Climbing to the Uhuru peak will begin at night. The hike is of medium difficulty, the main difficulty here is the height . By following your guide’s instructions, your chances of reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro will be the best.

Having reached the summit, the group will begin their descent to the Kibo camp (4700 m). After lunch and a few hours of rest, you will continue your descent to the Horombo camp. Here you will have the opportunity to take a hot shower and have a delicious dinner.

Overnight at Horombo camp.

Day 7. Hike from Horombo Huts to Marangu gate

Hike duration: 5-6hrs

Distance: 18km

After a delicious breakfast, the group will start hiking to the Marangu Gate (1980 m), from where cars will take you to Moshi. After a good rest, the group will spend the night at the hotel and prepare for an unforgettable safari tour the next day.
