Safety Guidelines for Hikers
1. Preparation and Planning:
Safety begins well before setting foot on the trail. Effective planning and research help avoid many common risks like getting lost, injuries from slips or falls, and encounters with wildlife or hazardous insects.
2. Safety Terms:
Before every hike, familiarize yourself with these terms to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
- Follow the Guide: Strictly adhere to the guide’s instructions. In unpredictable situations, inform the guide immediately and comply with all directions.
- Monitor Your Health: Inform the group leader if you feel symptoms of illness or discomfort.
- Gear Requirements: Bring all required personal clothing and gear for the hike. If you forget an item, notify the group leader before the hike.
- Swimming Caution: Always inform the group leader before swimming. Follow their advice if warned against certain areas.
- Stay with the Group: Do not leave or fall behind during breaks. Notify the leader if you need to rest.
- Route Discipline: Remain with the group, not moving ahead or behind without consent.
- Lost or Left Behind: If separated, stay in place, stay calm, and signal with voice or other means.
- Fire Safety: Avoid lighting fires without informing the group leader.
- Environmental Respect: Leave no garbage, and avoid damaging nature or cultural sites.
- Avoid Unknown Flora and Fauna: Refrain from tasting unfamiliar berries, mushrooms, or flowers, as they may be toxic.
- No Alcohol or Smoking: Alcohol use is prohibited, and smoking inside vehicles is not allowed.
- Group Discipline: Maintain discipline, support fellow hikers, and assist as needed.
3. Important Note
- Accountability for Violations: Any illegal behavior or rule violations by a participant, such as not following the group leader’s instructions, will require the participant to compensate for any resulting losses, as per the Civil Legislation of Armenia.
- Guide’s Authority on Safety: The group leader may halt or turn back the group due to weather or health concerns.
- Compliance Requirement: If a participant disregards the guide’s instructions or the safety terms, the guide will not bear responsibility for the hiker’s safety. The guide may also exclude rule-breaking participants from the hike without refund.
4. Experience and Medical Disclosure
For hikes requiring specialized skills, such as mountaineering, the group leader will notify participants in advance. Any participant who withholds relevant medical or experience information assumes responsibility for potential negative outcomes.
