LAKE AKNA

The pearl of Geghama mountains

There are more than seven dozen extinct volcanoes and large and small crater lakes formed as a result of eruptions in the Gegham mountain range. Among those many lakes, Akna lake stands out for its beauty. It is located at an altitude of 3030 m above sea level. The maximum depth is 15 m. It is surrounded in a circular shape by the mystical peaks of Geghama, many of which have found their reflection in the deep waters of the lake: Aknasar, Narine, Shushan, Shamprasar, Karhank, Geghmaghan, Aghusar, etc.

Since 2008, it has been included in the list of state natural monuments. It is fed by snowmelt and springs. In winter, the lake completely freezes over. The shores have been completely “occupied” by small frogs, which jump here and there with every step. The fauna of the lake has not yet been fully explored. While exploring the bottom of the lake, French divers discovered small colored fish.
